Description
The fetus is shown at approximately 29 weeks of gestation, lying in a flexed attitude within the intact amniotic sac and its surrounding amniotic fluid. The head is well developed with a rounded calvaria, fine scalp hair, a modelled external ear and closed eyelids, and one hand is brought to the mouth, illustrating the hand-to-mouth activity typical of the third trimester. The limbs are folded across the trunk, with the fingers and plantar surface of the foot clearly formed, and subcutaneous fat now smooths the contours of the shoulders, thorax and abdomen. The coiled umbilical cord passes from the anterior abdominal wall toward the placental disc seen behind the fetus, while the muscular uterine wall and decidua frame the whole scene in a lateral orientation. By week 29 the fetus has entered a period of rapid weight gain and brain growth, with surfactant production increasing and eyes able to open and respond to light.
