Description
At approximately 30 weeks of gestation the fetus lies curled within the intact amniotic sac, the translucent amniotic membrane visible as a thin veil between the fetal skin and the vascular uterine wall. The head is large relative to the trunk, with fine scalp hair, closed eyelids, a well formed external ear and rounded cheeks reflecting deposition of subcutaneous fat. The upper limbs are flexed across the chest with the hands near the face, while the thighs and knees are drawn up so that the feet lie close to the placental surface. The umbilical cord emerges from the abdomen and spirals toward the chorionic plate of the placenta, where branching fetal vessels radiate across its disc. By the third trimester the anatomy shown here corresponds to a period of rapid brain growth, surfactant maturation and weight gain, so this stage is central to counselling on late preterm birth and neonatal viability.
