Description
The fetus lies in a flexed attitude within the amniotic sac, seen in near-lateral profile with the head to the upper left and the lower limbs drawn up across the abdomen. Surface features typical of the early third trimester are visible: a rounded cranium with fine scalp hair, a well-modelled external ear with formed helix and antihelix, closed eyelids, and plump limbs with fully separated fingers and toes carrying discernible nail beds. One hand rests against the cheek while the opposite arm extends toward the placental surface. The umbilical cord emerges from the abdominal wall and spirals superiorly, its two umbilical arteries and single vein traced through the translucent amnion, inserting near the centre of the discoid placenta. The chorionic plate is patterned with branching fetal vessels, and the thick, vascular uterine wall encloses the amniotic fluid space. At 31 weeks the fetus occupies most of the uterine cavity, and the relationships shown here underpin obstetric assessment of lie, presentation and cord position on ultrasound. Placental site and cord insertion are routinely documented because eccentric or velamentous insertion, and a low-lying placenta, alter delivery planning.
