Description

The fetus lies curled in a flexed attitude within the amniotic cavity, head presenting toward the lower pole of the uterus and the spine convex against the placental disc. Late third-trimester features are visible: scalp hair, a well-formed external ear with firm cartilage, plump subcutaneous fat over the limbs and trunk, and fully formed fingers and toes with nails, one foot drawn up beside the flexed knees. The umbilical cord loops freely through the amniotic fluid, its two coiled umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein distinguishable within the cord, inserting centrally into the placenta.
