Description
The fetus lies in a compact, fully flexed attitude within the uterine cavity, head presenting toward the lower pole and the vertex covered with dark scalp hair. The face is turned toward the viewer with closed eyelids, a well-formed auricle, and rounded cheeks reflecting the subcutaneous fat deposited during the third trimester. The upper limbs are folded across the thorax with fingers close to the mouth, while the lower limbs are drawn up so the knees approach the abdomen and the plantar surface of one foot, with clearly separated toes, faces the viewer. The umbilical cord, showing the spiral course of the umbilical vein and paired umbilical arteries, loops from the abdominal insertion toward the discoid placenta seen at the upper margin, its maternal surface embedded in the myometrium.
