Description
Arising from the left lower lobar bronchus, the lateral basal segmental bronchus (B9) courses inferolaterally within the lower lobe, heading toward the costal surface while remaining lateral to the more medial basal segmental branches. An anterior perspective places the left main bronchus and its continuation into the lower lobar bronchus centrally, with the B9 origin seen as a discrete branch projecting laterally and slightly inferiorly from the basal bronchial trunk. Segmental relationships are readable by orientation: superior segmental supply lies more cranial, while the basal segments occupy the dependent portion of the lobe. Clear. Direct. Anterior visualization of B9 matters because bronchopulmonary segments are surgical and bronchoscopic units, and the lateral basal segment is a common target during segmentectomy for small peripheral carcinomas or localized bronchiectasis. This angle also helps teach how a basilar bronchus can be selected or inadvertently entered during bronchoscopy, since the lower lobe takeoff is more vertical and secretions preferentially pool in dependent basal segments in aspiration and postoperative atelectasis.
