Description
Along the lateral base of the adult male neck, the greater supraclavicular fossa appears as a triangular depression immediately superior to the clavicle and inferior to the lower border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The fossa lies anterolateral to the scalene muscles and the supraclavicular portion of the trapezius, tapering medially toward the sternoclavicular region and laterally toward the acromial end of the clavicle. Superficially, skin and platysma drape the contour, while the clavicular head of the sternocleidomastoid forms the anterior margin and the posterior triangle of the neck frames the posterior boundary. A clean surface landmark. Palpation of this hollow matters because it guides safe access to structures that sit just deep to it, including the supraclavicular (inferior deep cervical) lymph nodes and the terminal internal jugular and subclavian venous confluence at the venous angle. Clinicians use the lateral supraclavicular contour when assessing lymphadenopathy (including the classic left supraclavicular node associated with thoracoabdominal malignancy) and when planning approaches for central venous catheterization or supraclavicular brachial plexus block, where needle trajectory must respect the pleural cupola and subclavian vessels.
