Description

From a lateral perspective, the kidney is seen through its fibrous renal capsule, with the convex lateral border sweeping from the superior pole to the inferior pole while the flatter medial aspect leads toward the renal hilum. The renal cortex forms the outer rim immediately deep to the capsule, and the medulla lies internal to it as pyramidal tissue directed toward the renal sinus. Near the medial margin, the funnel of the renal pelvis collects urine from the major calyces and continues inferiorly as the ureter, a tubular continuation that descends toward the bladder. Lateral orientation helps clarify how parenchyma relates to the collecting system without the crowding of a full medial dissection. When planning a percutaneous nephrolithotomy, you want a clean mental map of cortex and medulla thickness relative to the renal pelvis and calyces so access can be directed through a posterior calyx to limit vascular injury, and this oblique-lateral relationship is often where learners misjudge depth. It also supports teaching the difference between obstructive hydronephrosis, which expands the pelvis and calyces, and cortical thinning that may follow prolonged obstruction. Use this artwork for renal anatomy labs, urology teaching files, and textbook figures explaining the renal capsule, cortex-medulla organization, and the ureteropelvic junction as a site of congenital narrowing. It also fits nephrology and radiology modules that correlate gross anatomy with ultrasound and CT appearances of the collecting system. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
