Description
Seen from the lateral aspect, the dorsum of the adult male foot slopes distally from the anterior ankle across the tarsus toward the metatarsals, with the lateral border formed by the cuboid region and the shaft of the fifth metatarsal. The lateral malleolus (fibula) sits superior and posterior to the dorsolateral midfoot, defining the contour of the ankle and its transition into the hindfoot. Anterior to the malleolus, the dorsum typically reveals the course of extensor tendons as subtle longitudinal ridges toward the toes, while the soft-tissue fullness over the sinus tarsi region lies anteroinferior to the lateral malleolus. Bony landmarks dominate. Surface relief does the teaching. A lateral perspective of the dorsal foot matters because it clarifies where the ankle ends and the midfoot begins, a distinction that becomes clinically concrete when you are describing swelling, bruising, or tenderness after an inversion injury. Palpation and surgical approaches rely on these relationships: the anterior talofibular ligament lies deep to the anterolateral ankle contour, and pain over the dorsolateral midfoot can indicate a fifth metatarsal base fracture rather than an isolated ankle sprain. Footwear and lacing pressure also concentrate over the dorsal extensor tendons, a common setup for extensor tendonitis or superficial nerve irritation along the dorsum.
