Seen from a lateral perspective, the posterior knee (genu) contours around the popliteal fossa between the distal femur and proximal tibia, then narrows into the proximal calf. The biceps femoris tendon tracks posterolaterally toward the fibular head, while the lateral head of gastrocnemius forms the inferior border of the fossa and blends into the calf mass distally. Deeper, the popliteus sits against the posterior tibia just inferior to the lateral femoral condyle, and the popliteal neurovascular bundle courses centrally, with the common fibular (peroneal) nerve running more laterally as it approaches the fibular neck. This lateral posterior view matters because the posterolateral corner concentrates key stabilizers of the tibiofemoral joint, and injuries here often hide behind an anteriorly focused knee exam. Varus stress with external rotation can disrupt the lateral collateral ligament complex and popliteus tendon, producing subtle instability that becomes obvious only with targeted testing and imaging correlation.
