Description
Viewed from the lateral side, the male ankle region is centered on the talocrural (tibiotalar) joint, where the distal fibula forms the lateral malleolus and descends farther distally than the lateral contour of the distal tibia. Inferior to this bony prominence, the talus sits between the malleoli, its lateral trochlear surface articulating with the fibular malleolar facet while the calcaneus (heel bone) lies posteroinferior, projecting as the heel. The fibula remains lateral to the tibia, and the lateral malleolus stands superior and anterior to the most posterior point of the calcaneal tuberosity. Clinically, a true lateral perspective helps clarify why lateral ankle sprains cluster around the anterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligament, both aligned with the lateral malleolus and stressed during inversion in plantarflexion. This orientation also supports teaching of bimalleolar morphology: because the fibular malleolus extends more distally, it acts as a lateral buttress to the talus, and malleolar fractures can destabilize the tibiotalar mortise even when the calcaneus is intact.
