Description
From a lateral perspective, the palpebral fissure appears as an elliptical slit between the upper eyelid (palpebra superior) and lower eyelid (palpebra inferior), bounded at each end by the medial and lateral canthi. The lateral commissure sits closer to the zygomatic region and temporal skin, while the medial commissure turns toward the root of the nose, where the lacrimal lake and caruncle would lie just anterior to the globe. Along the lid margins, you would expect the gray line and the posterior lid margin adjacent to the ocular surface, with the eyelashes projecting anteriorly and the tarsal plate contouring the free edge. Orbital rim and cheek contours frame the eyelids from posterior and inferior. A side view of the palpebral fissure matters because it clarifies lid position and canthal geometry, the details clinicians assess when they grade ptosis, lid retraction, or exposure keratopathy.
