Description
From a lateral perspective, the male labium inferius (lower lip) is rendered with its slight eversion, bringing the vermilion border into clear profile against the adjacent facial soft tissues. Anteriorly, the free margin transitions from vermilion to the external cutaneous lip at the vermilion-cutaneous junction, while posteriorly it turns inward toward the oral vestibule as the labial mucosa. Superior to the lower lip sits the labium superius, with the oral fissure (rima oris) between them, and inferiorly the contour blends toward the mentolabial sulcus overlying the mental region of the mandible. Surface form implies the underlying orbicularis oris, with the modiolus expected posterolaterally at the oral commissure. Profile anatomy of the lower lip matters when you need to communicate mechanics of lip seal, oral competence, and the relationship of the vermilion to the chin in facial analysis.
