Coccyx anatomy comes into focus at the coccygeal apex, the rounded distal tip of the terminal vertebral column, presented in lateral profile. Superior to the apex, the coccygeal segments taper toward the base of the coccyx, which articulates with the inferior sacrum at the sacrococcygeal joint. The anterior (pelvic) surface appears concave relative to the posterior surface, reflecting the normal curvature that supports the pelvic outlet. Fine bony contours around the distal coccygeal body and terminal tip are emphasized from this fixed lateral perspective. Small bone, big symptoms. Pain at the coccygeal apex drives a large share of coccydynia cases after a backward fall, childbirth-related strain, or repetitive microtrauma, and a lateral view helps correlate focal tenderness with distal angulation, subluxation at the sacrococcygeal or intercoccygeal joints, and post-fracture callus. Clinicians also reference this region when planning injections aimed at the ganglion impar, where needle trajectory is judged against the anterior contour of the distal coccyx and the adjacent soft-tissue plane.
