Description
Seen in lateral profile, the adult male gluteal region is defined by the convexity of the gluteus maximus forming the bulk of the buttock, with the gluteal fold marking the inferior border where the soft tissues transition toward the posterior thigh. Superiorly, the contour rises toward the iliac crest region and the posterior superior iliac spine area, while anteriorly it blends toward the lateral hip over the greater trochanter. Posteriorly the surface curves toward the sacral region and midline cleft, and inferiorly it approaches the proximal hamstring origin zone near the ischial tuberosity. A simple silhouette, but anatomically specific. Lateral inspection of the buttock is clinically tied to both biomechanics and procedural safety. Palpation and visual estimation of the superolateral quadrant guides safer intramuscular injection placement away from the sciatic nerve, which courses deep to gluteus maximus as it exits the greater sciatic foramen inferior to piriformis. This side view also supports teaching of Trendelenburg-related gait concepts, where weakness of gluteus medius and minimus (deep and superior to the maximus, inserting on the greater trochanter) alters pelvic stability even when surface contour changes are subtle.
