Description
Spanning from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle, the sternocleidomastoid defines the anterior boundary of the posterior triangle in this lateral cervical region. Posterior to its muscle belly, the trapezius forms the posterior border, with the clavicle as the inferior limit and the occipital region superiorly. Within that triangle you would expect the external jugular vein to descend superficial to the investing fascia, while the spinal accessory nerve (CN XI) crosses obliquely toward trapezius; deeper, the scalene muscles and the brachial plexus roots occupy the floor. Clean surface anatomy. That topography matters when you are localizing pathology or planning access, because the posterior triangle is a corridor where a superficially placed nerve and vein coexist with deeper neurovascular structures. Iatrogenic injury to the spinal accessory nerve during lymph node biopsy in the posterior triangle remains a classic cause of trapezius weakness and scapular winging, and this side view helps fix its expected course relative to the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius. The same relationships guide placement of a superficial cervical plexus block at the midpoint of the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid, and they frame the typical route of the external jugular vein for venous cannulation.
