Seen in lateral profile, the male sural (calf) region is defined by the posterior compartment’s surface contour, with the gastrocnemius forming the dominant posterior bulge and the soleus contributing a broader, flatter fullness inferiorly. Deep (crural) fascia invests these muscles and tightens distally toward the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon, which lies posterior to the ankle and inserts on the calcaneal tuberosity. Along the lateral border of the calf, the fibular (peroneal) compartment sits anterolateral to the soleus, while the popliteal fossa marks the superior transition from thigh to leg.
