Description
Within the lumen of a small blood vessel, a large amoeboid leukocyte dominates the field, its irregular outline and ruffled membrane setting it apart from the surrounding erythrocytes. Biconcave red blood cells occupy most of the intravascular space and drift around the white cell, some layered closer to the vessel wall and others passing centrally in the plasma stream. Scattered, smaller anuclear elements consistent with platelets appear as tiny fragments between erythrocytes. Scale and contrast emphasize the macrophage lineage cell as it moves among the formed elements of blood. Macrophages are classically tissue-resident, but their circulating precursor, the monocyte, travels in blood before diapedesis through postcapillary venules into inflamed or infected tissue, where it differentiates and amplifies phagocytic capacity. This microscopic transit view helps clarify why leukocyte margination occurs: larger, less deformable white cells tend to shift toward the periphery of flow, promoting endothelial contact before extravasation. Think acute bacterial infection, atherosclerotic plaque formation, or granulomatous inflammation. Those pathways begin here.
