Description
Seen in lateral profile, the adult male mammary region occupies the superficial anterior thoracic wall overlying the pectoral fascia and pectoralis major, with the nipple and areola positioned on the anterolateral chest. Superiorly it approaches the clavicular portion of the pectoralis major and the infraclavicular area, while inferiorly it blends toward the inframammary fold region and the superior rectus sheath. Anterior contours transition posteriorly into the axillary fossa, with the lateral border aligning near the anterior axillary fold formed by pectoralis major. Clear surface limits matter here because male breast findings are commonly judged first by inspection and palpation before any imaging, and a lateral view makes anterior projection and relationship to the axilla easier to teach. Gynecomastia typically presents as a tender, rubbery, subareolar disk, while male breast carcinoma more often appears as an eccentric mass with possible skin or nipple retraction and clinically relevant drainage toward axillary lymph nodes. Side-on orientation also supports procedural planning, such as marking a subareolar incision for gynecomastia excision while respecting the nipple areolar complex and the anterior axillary fold as a landmark.
