Salmonella organisms appear as individual, medium-sized bacilli with blunt ends, most often separated but sometimes aligned in short, linear pairings suggestive of recent binary fission. A thin cell envelope consistent with Enterobacteriaceae frames the rod shape, and the overall morphology reads as a Gram-negative bacillus rather than a coccus or spirillum. Orientation varies randomly, without the long chains more typical of some Gram-positive rods. Morphology alone will not speciate Salmonella, but it sets expectations for downstream identification in suspected salmonellosis, including culture characteristics and confirmation panels used in clinical microbiology.
