Viewed in lateral profile, the male gluteal fold (sulcus glutealis) forms a horizontal skin crease at the inferior margin of the buttock, marking the transition from the convex soft tissue over the gluteus maximus to the more cylindrical proximal thigh. Superior to the fold lies the bulk of the gluteal region, while inferior to it the posterior thigh contour begins over the hamstring compartment. The crease runs from a more medial posterior position toward a lateral point near the greater trochanter region, where the buttock contour tapers onto the lateral hip. Surface topography here matters because the sulcus glutealis is used as an external landmark for both examination and intervention in the posterior hip and proximal thigh.
