Description
Beneath the mandibular symphysis, the submental triangle is outlined on the anterior neck, bounded laterally by the paired anterior bellies of the digastric muscles and inferiorly by the body of the hyoid bone. The midline floor of this region overlies the mylohyoid muscle, with the suprahyoid soft tissues tapering superiorly toward the chin and blending laterally into the submandibular region. Superficial landmarks of the male anterior neck frame the space, including the submental contour between the mandible superiorly and the hyoid at the inferior base. Clear boundaries. Accurate surface topography of the submental triangle matters when planning procedures that traverse the midline suprahyoid neck, because small shifts in head extension and mandibular position change the relationship between skin creases, the hyoid level, and the anterior digastric borders. Infections can track across this midline compartment; understanding where the submental space sits relative to the mylohyoid helps explain why odontogenic spread can present as submental swelling and why deeper spread may threaten the airway.
