Description
Palmar skin creases and volar pads frame the anterior aspect of the male hand, with the thenar eminence lying radial and the hypothenar eminence ulnar, both bounding the central hollow of the palm. Across this mid-palmar region, the palmar aponeurosis fans distally toward the bases of digits II to V, superficial to the flexor tendons and deep palmar spaces. The proximal palm blends into the wrist crease, while the digital palmar surfaces extend distally to the fingertips. Clinical teaching often hinges on this surface anatomy because it maps cleanly to deeper structures that surgeons and therapists navigate by feel: the palmar aponeurosis overlies the flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus tendons, and the thenar compartment corresponds to abductor pollicis brevis and flexor pollicis brevis, with the recurrent branch of the median nerve vulnerable during thenar dissection. Dupuytren disease begins as nodularity and longitudinal cords within the palmar fascia, drawing the ring and small fingers into flexion, and this anterior view supports accurate explanation of contracture patterns and surgical fasciectomy planning.
