Description
Posterior surface anatomy of the male thorax is centered on the thoracic vertebral column, with the spinous processes forming a midline ridge from the cervicothoracic junction inferiorly toward the thoracolumbar transition. Scapulae lie posterolateral to the spine, their medial borders paralleling the vertebral column, while the posterior ribs and intercostal spaces sweep laterally beneath the trapezius and latissimus dorsi. The superficial contour typically includes the vertebral prominence at C7, the spine of the scapula at approximately T3, and the inferior angle of the scapula near T7 in neutral posture. Landmarks first, then layers. Palpable posterior thoracic landmarks anchor clinical examination and many procedural safe zones, because rib level, scapular position, and midline alignment guide you to the correct interspace and help you avoid the scapular body and medial neurovascular bundles. For thoracentesis or pleural drain insertion, clinicians commonly select a posterior or posterolateral approach in the 7th to 9th intercostal spaces along the midaxillary to posterior axillary line, keeping the needle just superior to the rib to reduce risk to the intercostal neurovascular bundle that runs along the inferior rib margin. This posterior view also supports teaching of scoliosis screening, kyphotic posture assessment, and the surface projection of the lungs (apices above the clavicles, bases descending to about the 10th rib posteriorly in quiet respiration). Ideal for gross anatomy lab manuals, musculoskeletal and respiratory blocks, OSCE station diagrams on thoracic surface anatomy, and patient education sheets explaining posterior chest examination, percussion zones, and common procedural entry sites.
