Description
Posteriorly oriented anatomy of the male large bowel is presented with emphasis on the longitudinal muscle bands of the colon, the teniae coli. The taenia libera is positioned along the free posterior surface, while the other teniae course more anterolaterally toward the mesocolic attachment and the omental taenia, creating a three-band pattern that frames the haustra. Inferiorly, these longitudinal bands converge toward the rectosigmoid junction and then blend as the bowel transitions into the rectum, where the teniae spread into a continuous longitudinal layer. Spatial orientation of the teniae matters when you teach or operate on the distal colon. Following the taeniae coli posteriorly is a reliable method to identify and trace colonic segments, and the convergence pattern helps distinguish sigmoid colon from rectum during mobilization. It also anchors clinical discussion of sigmoid volvulus and large-bowel obstruction, where the haustral pattern and orientation of the longitudinal bands relate directly to torsion, segment identification, and safe placement of colotomies or stapler lines.
