Description
A standing female torso is rendered semi-transparently in left lateral projection so the pelvic viscera read through the abdominal wall. The uterus sits in its normal anteverted, anteflexed position between the urinary bladder anteriorly and the rectum and sigmoid colon posteriorly, with the cervix projecting into the upper vagina and the fallopian tube and ovary visible on the exposed side. The uterine cavity is opened to show the early gestation at about week 4, when the conceptus is only a few millimetres across and implanted within the thickened endometrium; the uterine body itself is still close to its non-pregnant size and remains entirely within the bony pelvis. Loops of small intestine, the pelvic bone and the sacrum provide the surrounding spatial framework, while the subject's hands rest on the abdomen and hip. Week 4 corresponds to the period just after implantation, when hCG becomes detectable and pregnancy is usually first confirmed biochemically rather than on ultrasound.
