Description
A slender female torso is shown in profile with the abdominal wall and pelvic skeleton rendered semi-transparently so that the gravid uterus sits in clear view within the true pelvis. The uterus is anteverted and only slightly enlarged at seven weeks of gestation, containing a small gestational sac with the developing embryo, while the uterine tubes and ovaries extend laterally from the uterine fundus. Anterior to the uterus lies the urinary bladder, posterior to it the rectum and sigmoid colon, and loops of small intestine occupy the space above the pelvic brim. The sacrum and pelvic bone frame the organs posteriorly and inferiorly, with the cervix and vagina continuing caudally along the midline. At week 7 the embryo measures only a few millimetres in crown-rump length, yet the uterine and adnexal relationships shown here underpin routine early-pregnancy assessment.
