Anterior facial anatomy is centered on the infraorbital region, bounded superiorly by the inferior orbital rim (margo infraorbitalis) and transitioning inferiorly into the buccal region over the anterior maxilla. Superficial landmarks include the lower eyelid (palpebra inferior), the infraorbital groove and margin, and the nasolabial fold running inferolaterally from the ala of the nose toward the upper lip. Deep to the skin, the orbicularis oculi encircles the orbital aperture while the levator labii superioris lies inferior and medial, and the infraorbital foramen typically sits inferior to the orbital rim in line with the second maxillary premolar, transmitting the infraorbital neurovascular bundle. It is a tight topographic corridor. Clinically, the infraorbital nerve (V2) is vulnerable in zygomaticomaxillary complex and orbital floor (blowout) fractures, producing numbness of the lower eyelid, lateral nose, and upper lip, and this anterior view helps correlate sensory territory with bony injury patterns. Surgeons also rely on the infraorbital margin, foramen, and nasolacrimal region when planning subciliary or transconjunctival approaches to the orbit and when placing midface fixation to avoid iatrogenic neuropraxia. Soft-tissue swelling here can mislead. Periorbital ecchymosis and step-offs along the infraorbital rim are easier to teach from a straight-on presentation.
