Description
Anteriorly, the right and left lungs are presented in frontal (coronal) profile with the margo anterior (anterior border) picked out in color along the sharp edge where costal and mediastinal surfaces meet. Superiorly, each border approaches the apex beneath the thoracic inlet; inferiorly it descends toward the base near the diaphragmatic surface. Medially, the left anterior border shows the expected interruption at the cardiac notch adjacent to the pericardium, while the right border maintains a more continuous contour toward the sternocostal region. The line is crisp. Teaching the anterior border matters because it defines the anterior limit of pleural reflection and helps orient surface anatomy on the chest wall. When you map the left cardiac notch and lingula in relation to the sternum and costal cartilages, you can explain why the pericardium is more accessible on the left in the classic pericardiocentesis approach at the left 5th or 6th intercostal space near the parasternal line. The same boundary also frames the anterior extent of pneumothorax on upright radiographs, where pleural air often accumulates anteromedially before it becomes obvious laterally.
