Description

Occipital bone anatomy is centered here on the mastoid border (margo mastoideus) of the squamous part, seen from a posterior perspective along the inferolateral margin of the cranium. The mastoid border runs obliquely from the vicinity of the asterion toward the jugular region, where it meets the mastoid process of the temporal bone at the occipitomastoid suture. Superiorly and medially, the contour transitions toward the lambdoid suture with the parietal bones, while inferiorly the curvature sweeps toward the base of skull, adjacent to the area that contributes to the jugular foramen and the groove for the sigmoid sinus on the endocranial surface. Bone margins are the focus. Understanding this border matters whenever you need reliable bony landmarks at the posterior cranial base. Occipitomastoid and lambdoid sutures guide orientation in trauma assessment of occipital and basilar skull fractures, where fracture lines may traverse sutures or mimic suture diastasis on imaging. The fixed rear view also supports teaching the asterion as an external landmark approximating the junction of transverse and sigmoid sinuses, a point often referenced when planning posterior fossa exposure and when avoiding sinus injury during burr-hole placement. In neuroanatomy and gross anatomy courses, this illustration supports osteology labs that emphasize sutural anatomy, cranial base boundaries, and the relationships between occipital and temporal bones. It also fits atlases, ENT and neurosurgical educational materials, and radiology teaching files that correlate palpable landmarks with CT bone windows of the posterior skull.
