Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male epicranium is defined by the scalp layers draping over the calvaria, with skin and dense subcutaneous connective tissue superficial to the epicranial aponeurosis (galea aponeurotica). Anteriorly, the frontal belly of occipitofrontalis blends with the aponeurosis as it approaches the supraorbital region, while posteriorly the occipital belly anchors the same sheet over the superior nuchal line of the occipital bone. Between them, the galea spans superior to the parietal bones, remaining superficial to the pericranium (periosteum) that adheres tightly to the outer table of the skull. A lateral appraisal of this region matters because the epicranial aponeurosis creates a mechanical and clinical plane that governs how scalp injuries behave. Lacerations that violate the galea tend to gape widely because the occipitofrontalis retracts the wound edges, and bleeding can be brisk as vessels in the dense connective tissue are tethered open. Loose areolar tissue deep to the aponeurosis also explains why blood or infection can track broadly across the scalp and extend anteriorly into the eyelids, producing periorbital ecchymosis after a seemingly posterior impact.
