Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male infraorbital (suborbital) region occupies the band of soft tissue inferior to the lower eyelid and anterior to the orbital rim, tapering medially toward the lateral nasal sidewall and laterally toward the zygomatic prominence. The inferior margin of the orbit and the contour of the zygomatic bone frame the area, with the infraorbital groove and infraorbital foramen positioned on the anterior maxilla just inferior to the orbital margin. Superficially, the lower eyelid–cheek junction aligns with the orbicularis oculi and the underlying orbicularis retaining ligament, transitioning inferiorly onto the malar fat pad over the cheek. Clinically, this is the corridor of the infraorbital nerve (V2) as it exits the infraorbital foramen to supply sensation to the lower eyelid, lateral nose, upper lip, and anterior cheek. A key landmark. In midface trauma, blowout fractures of the orbital floor and fractures of the zygomaticomaxillary complex can produce infraorbital hypesthesia, and lateral profiling helps teach the relationship between the orbital rim, maxilla, and the path of the neurovascular bundle. Surgeons also reference this surface anatomy when placing infraorbital nerve blocks and when planning lower blepharoplasty or midface lift planes to avoid postoperative numbness and contour irregularity.
