Description
Seen from the lateral side, the male anterior ankle region centers on the talocrural (tibiotalar) joint, with the distal tibia positioned superiorly and medially and the trochlea of the talus seated directly inferior to it. Anterior to the tibia and talus, the extensor tendons course distally toward the dorsum of the foot, held close to the joint line by the extensor retinacula. The fibula lies posterolateral to the tibia, its lateral malleolus projecting distal and lateral as the outer buttress of the ankle mortise. Joint congruence is the story here. A lateral anterior profile clarifies how anterior soft tissues relate to the tibiotalar joint space, a relationship that drives both examination and intervention. Forced plantarflexion can produce anterior ankle impingement with osteophytes along the anterior distal tibia or talar neck, and this view helps explain why pain localizes at the anterolateral gutter during activity.
