Description
Inferior to the hyoid bone, the lateral infrahyoid region frames the strap muscles as they descend toward the sternum and clavicle, with the thyroid cartilage and cricoid cartilage positioned anterosuperior to the first tracheal rings. Along the anterior border of sternocleidomastoid, the superficial cervical fascia overlies the deeper visceral compartment, where the thyroid gland would sit anterolateral to the upper trachea and inferior to the larynx. Posterior to the airway, the cervical esophagus tracks inferiorly, while the carotid sheath lies lateral to the larynx and trachea, carrying the common carotid artery medially, internal jugular vein laterally, and vagus nerve between them. Key surface landmarks remain clear in profile: the hyoid at the superior margin, the thyroid prominence anteriorly, and the suprasternal notch inferiorly. A side view matters in the infrahyoid neck because many core procedures approach the airway and visceral compartment in a parasagittal corridor. Cricothyrotomy targets the cricothyroid membrane between thyroid and cricoid cartilages, and this perspective helps you judge depth and angle relative to the overlying platysma and strap muscles.
