Positioned on the proximal anterior thigh of an adult male, the femoral triangle (trigonum femorale, Scarpa’s triangle) is bounded superiorly by the inguinal ligament, laterally by the medial border of sartorius, and medially by the lateral border of adductor longus. Within this triangular interval, the femoral artery lies lateral to the femoral vein, with the femoral nerve most lateral, all arranged just inferior to the inguinal ligament and heading distally toward the adductor canal. Deep to these contents, the pectineus and iliopsoas form much of the muscular floor, while the femoral sheath encloses the vessels and the femoral canal sits medial to the vein. Clinically, this anterior surface anatomy underpins reliable femoral pulse palpation and vascular access, since the femoral artery is approached just below the inguinal ligament at the mid-inguinal point, where it is superficial and compressible against the femoral head. Puncturing too medially risks venous cannulation or hematoma within the femoral sheath and canal, while a puncture too high may enter the retroperitoneal space; this is why the triangle’s borders are taught as a hard safety framework for catheterization, arterial lines, and hemostatic compression. Femoral hernias also track through the femoral canal and can present inferior and lateral to the pubic tubercle, a spatial relationship that makes sense only when the triangle’s medial compartment is clear.
