Description

Filamentous hyphae form the supporting mycelium, from which upright conidiophores project distally into the field. Each conidiophore terminates in a club-like vesicle, and phialides are arranged around the vesicular surface, giving rise to radiating chains of conidia that create a roughly spherical conidial head. Conidia cluster most densely at the periphery, while the smooth stalk sits centrally and proximally against the textured substrate. Scale matters. Mycologists and clinical microbiology staff rely on this morphology to separate Aspergillus fumigatus from other hyphomycetes and from superficially similar environmental molds such as Stachybotrys, which produces phialides on conidiophores but lacks a vesicle-bearing conidial head and typically forms slimy conidial masses rather than dry, radiating chains. That distinction is not academic: A. fumigatus is a common cause of invasive aspergillosis in neutropenic patients and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis in patients with pre-existing cavities, and it can drive allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis in asthma or cystic fibrosis. The conidial head architecture also maps cleanly to what you see on lactophenol cotton blue preparations and on common culture media. Use this rendering in medical mycology lectures, MLS and pathology training sets, or as a figure in infectious disease and pulmonology publications discussing airborne conidia, laboratory identification, and the clinical spectrum of aspergillosis versus other indoor molds.
