Description
Running obliquely from the lateral clavicle toward the proximal humerus, the deltopectoral groove marks the surface interval between the anterior border of the deltoid laterally and the clavicular head of pectoralis major medially. In an adult female torso, the depression is typically most apparent just inferior to the clavicle, where the deltoid and pectoral contours frame the anterior shoulder and upper chest. Deep to this superficial landmark lies the deltopectoral triangle (Morenheim’s fossa), bounded superiorly by the clavicle and filled by the deltopectoral fascia continuous with the clavipectoral fascia. The cephalic vein commonly courses within or just medial to the groove as it ascends toward the deltopectoral triangle. Palpation of this groove matters in real workflows. It guides the deltopectoral surgical approach to the shoulder, used for open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humeral fractures and for many total shoulder arthroplasty exposures, where splitting the interval between deltoid and pectoralis major limits deltoid detachment. The cephalic vein is the key landmark and potential hazard: surgeons may preserve it laterally or medially, while clinicians placing a deltopectoral cutdown for venous access use the same surface anatomy, and the nearby thoracoacromial vessels and pectoral branch can complicate dissection if the plane is lost. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching to tie palpable landmarks of the female shoulder girdle to deeper fascial planes, and in surgical texts outlining the deltopectoral approach, venous access techniques, or implant incision planning with attention to breast contour and skin creases.
