Centered on the anterior abdominal wall, the umbilicus (navel, belly button) sits in the midline within the linea alba, typically at the level of the L3 to L4 intervertebral disc in the adult female. Surrounding periumbilical skin contours form a shallow depression with superior and inferior folds, bordered laterally by the paired rectus abdominis contours and their semilunar lines as they run vertically toward the costal margin superiorly and the pubic region inferiorly. Subcutaneous tissue thickness and the orientation of skin creases over the umbilical ring vary, but the umbilicus remains a reliable surface landmark for midline orientation. Clinically, the umbilicus marks the site of congenital fascial weakness at the umbilical ring, where umbilical and paraumbilical hernias present as anterior bulges that enlarge with Valsalva and become more common after pregnancy or with increased intra-abdominal pressure. Surgeons also use the umbilical region for access: a transumbilical incision or trocar placement in laparoscopic procedures often offers direct midline entry while keeping scars concealed within the navel, but it demands awareness of variable subcutaneous thickness and the risk of port-site hernia. Dermatome teaching also benefits from this view. The umbilicus approximates the T10 dermatome.
