Description
Centered on the female sinciput, the frontal region is presented from the superficial surface, spanning the hairline superiorly to the supraorbital margins and glabella inferiorly, and laterally toward the temporal lines. Beneath the skin and subcutaneous tissue, the frontalis muscle lies anterior to the frontal bone and blends posteriorly with the galea aponeurotica, while the corrugator supercilii and procerus occupy a deeper plane at the medial brow. The supraorbital and supratrochlear neurovascular bundles emerge near the superior orbital rim, then ascend in the forehead superficial to the periosteum and deep to the dermis, accompanied variably by the frontal branch of the superficial temporal artery laterally. Surface anatomy of the forehead matters because clinical work here lives and dies by millimeters, from cosmetic injection planes to nerve blocks and flap design. Botulinum toxin placement into the frontalis differs from injections targeting corrugator or procerus, and misplaced dosing can produce brow ptosis by weakening the frontalis elevator while leaving depressors unopposed. Minor trauma also behaves differently in this region: lacerations that violate the frontalis or galea may gape along relaxed skin tension lines, and hematoma can track widely within the loose areolar tissue of the scalp.
