Description
Oriented to the lateral thoracic wall of an adult female, the skin surface and underlying contours outline the breast mound anteriorly with an inferior inframammary fold, then sweep posteriorly toward the lateral rib cage. Along the midaxillary region, the intercostal spaces create subtle step-offs between adjacent ribs, while the anterior axillary line relates to the lateral border of pectoralis major and the posterior axillary fold corresponds to latissimus dorsi and teres major. Superiorly, the axillary hollow sits between the chest wall and proximal upper limb, and inferiorly the thorax transitions onto the flank over the costal margin and external oblique. Key surface landmarks are clear. Clinically, the lateral thorax matters because many urgent procedures and pain syndromes localize to the midaxillary line, where chest tube thoracostomy is commonly performed through the 4th or 5th intercostal space, passing just superior to the rib to avoid the intercostal vein, artery, and nerve in the costal groove. The same topography underpins serratus anterior plane blocks and intercostal nerve blocks for rib fracture pain, and it frames how lateral breast tissue drains toward axillary lymph nodes, a constant concern in breast cancer staging and surgical planning. Small errors in level or line can injure long thoracic nerve or lateral thoracic vessels. Landmarks prevent that.
