Description
Across the posterior female trunk, the superficial muscle layers frame familiar bony landmarks from the cervical region to the pelvis. Superiorly, the trapezius spans from the occipital bone and nuchal ligament down toward the thoracic spinous processes, its fibers running laterally to the acromion and spine of the scapula; inferolaterally, the latissimus dorsi sweeps from the thoracolumbar fascia and iliac crest toward the humerus, creating the posterior axillary fold. Between these broad sheets, the medial border and inferior angle of the scapula sit lateral to the spinous processes, while the vertebral groove marks the midline overlying the erector spinae mass. Surface anatomy is the point. That spatial layout matters when you are teaching or documenting palpable back landmarks and their relationship to shoulder mechanics. Scapular position on the thoracic wall, and its changing orientation with arm elevation, drives clinical reasoning around scapular dyskinesis, serratus anterior palsy with medial winging, and compensatory trapezius overactivity that commonly presents as neck and interscapular pain. Inferiorly, the iliac crest and posterior superior iliac spine provide dependable reference points for estimating lumbar levels and describing low back pain distribution along the paraspinal muscles and thoracolumbar fascia. Use this artwork for gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching in medical, nursing, and physical therapy curricula, where students must learn to correlate muscle contours with the scapula, vertebral column, and pelvis on a living patient.
