From a superior aspect, the male scalp at the vertex (crown) overlies the highest convexity of the calvaria, centered on the parietal regions and approaching the midline over the sagittal suture. Anteriorly, the vertex grades toward the frontal bone and bregma region, while posteriorly it slopes toward the occipital bone and lambda region. Laterally, the curvature falls away toward the temporal lines, where the galea aponeurotica blends with the superficial temporal fascia. Skin, dense connective tissue, and epicranial aponeurosis form the layered caput that follows the cranial contour. This top-down cranial view matters because the vertex is a frequent site of androgenetic alopecia in men, and its vascular and aponeurotic anatomy explains both bleeding patterns and flap mobility in scalp surgery. Lacerations here can gape widely when they cross the line of pull of the occipitofrontalis and galea, so orientation relative to the midline and underlying sutures becomes a practical point for repair. It is also the region where the emissary veins can connect scalp veins to the superior sagittal sinus, a small route with outsized clinical implications in infections.
