Description

Framed in lateral view, the lumbar vertebra rotates into profile to emphasize the superior vertebral notch (incisura vertebralis superior) along the superior margin of the pedicle, immediately posterior to the vertebral body and anterior to the lamina. As the animation advances, the notch is read in context with the inferior vertebral notch below, clarifying how adjacent pedicles contribute to the intervertebral foramen (foramen intervertebrale). The superior and inferior articular processes sit posteriorly, while the transverse process projects laterally as a fixed landmark for orientation. Clinically, this notch matters because it defines the bony boundary of the intervertebral foramen, the corridor for the spinal nerve, dorsal root ganglion, and segmental vessels. Degenerative loss of disc height and facet arthrosis can reduce foraminal area and compress the exiting lumbar nerve root, a common substrate for L4 or L5 radiculopathy and foraminal stenosis on CT and MRI. Showing the notch dynamically, with sequential alignment of adjacent vertebrae, makes the foramen’s changing geometry easier to grasp than a single still. Use this animation in spine anatomy teaching for medical and physiotherapy curricula, in radiology modules that correlate osseous landmarks with sagittal and parasagittal imaging, or in publishing figures for chapters on lumbar foraminal stenosis and pedicle-based instrumentation planning. It also fits patient-facing educational media when explaining where nerve root impingement occurs. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
