Centered just superior to the clavicle, the lesser supraclavicular fossa (supraclavicular triangle) is outlined medially by the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and laterally by the anterior border of the trapezius, with the clavicle forming its inferior margin. Within this shallow depression, the inferior belly of the omohyoid may be appreciated coursing obliquely, and the overlying skin and superficial fascia commonly reveal the external jugular vein as it descends to pierce the deep cervical fascia near the clavicle. Deep to the fossa lie the scalene fat pad, the subclavian artery and vein, and the roots and trunks of the brachial plexus as they pass between the anterior and middle scalene muscles. A small space, big consequences. Surface definition of this fossa matters in procedures that approach the thoracic outlet from above. Supraclavicular brachial plexus block relies on consistent identification of the fossa and the lateral edge of sternocleidomastoid to position the needle over the plexus, while keeping clear of the pleural dome and subclavian vessels that sit immediately inferior and posterior to the clavicle. Clinically, fullness or loss of the normal hollow can signal supraclavicular lymphadenopathy (including left-sided involvement near Virchow nodes in systemic malignancy) or soft tissue distortion from thoracic outlet syndrome and clavicular injury. Educators use this surface anatomy view to teach cervical triangles, palpable muscular borders, and safe zones for venous access in gross anatomy, physical diagnosis, and regional anesthesia curricula. Medical publishers and clinical teams will also find it suitable for patient-facing explanations of supraclavicular swelling, preprocedural marking for nerve block, and documentation of anatomic landmarks in women where soft tissue contours can alter the apparent depth of the fossa.
