Seen from the dorsal aspect of a male foot, the five digits are arranged from the hallux medially to the fifth toe laterally, with the nail plates centered on each distal phalanx and the dorsal digital skin creases marking the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joint lines. Extensor tendons to the toes create subtle longitudinal ridges along the dorsum, most prominent over the hallux and lesser toes as they course distally toward the distal phalanges. Medially, the contour transitions toward the first ray, while laterally the soft tissue bulk diminishes toward the fifth digit, clarifying the transverse alignment of the toe heads across the forefoot.
