Description
Seen from a dorsal (superior) perspective, the male forefoot is rendered in surface anatomy with emphasis on the dorsal surfaces of digits I to V. The hallux lies medial and slightly thicker in profile, while the lesser toes taper laterally toward digit V, with the interdigital spaces separating adjacent phalanges and defining the webbing proximally. Dorsal digital contours imply the underlying proximal, middle, and distal phalanges, with the metatarsophalangeal region sitting proximal to the toe bases and the nail plates oriented distally. Dorsal toe surface landmarks matter in daily clinical work because skin, nails, and extensor mechanisms are where pathology declares itself first. Early gout commonly targets the first metatarsophalangeal joint and distorts the dorsal medial contour, and hammertoe or mallet toe deformities change the dorsal prominence over the proximal interphalangeal or distal interphalangeal joints, driving shoe-pressure lesions and dorsal corns.
