Description
Posterior surface anatomy is presented in an upright adult male with the pelvis and proximal thighs covered by shorts, so bony and muscular landmarks are read through contour rather than exposed skin. The nuchal region transitions into the trapezius over the scapular spine, while the medial borders of the scapulae track parallel to the thoracic vertebral column. Inferiorly, the posterior axillary folds form where latissimus dorsi sweeps toward the humerus, and the paraspinal groove frames the erector spinae before the lumbosacral junction drops toward the superior gluteal region beneath the waistband. Clothing changes what you can and cannot teach from surface anatomy, and that is the point of this plate. Palpation and inspection still rely on relationships, for example, locating the posterior superior iliac spines (the dimples of Venus when visible) to approximate the S2 level, or tracing the iliac crest toward L4 for lumbar puncture orientation, even when the gluteal cleft and ischial tuberosities are not shown. This posterior standing posture also mirrors common clinical inspection for scoliosis and scapular winging, where asymmetry of shoulder height, scapular position, and paraspinal contours can be assessed without disrobing. Subtle cues matter. Ideal use cases include OSCE stations and physical examination manuals covering posterior inspection and landmarking with patient modesty preserved, as well as anatomy lab pre-briefs on what can be inferred from a clothed posterior view. It also fits patient education materials in sports medicine and primary care for explaining posture, back pain screening, and palpation landmarks over the thoracolumbar spine and pelvis.
