Surface landmarks of the male lateral abdominal wall are presented from an anterior perspective, spanning from the inferior margin of the costal cartilages and costal arch superiorly to the iliac crest and anterior superior iliac spine inferiorly. The flank occupies the region lateral to the umbilical area, bounded anteriorly by the semilunar line overlying the lateral border of rectus abdominis and blending posteriorly toward the lumbar region. Subtle contours reflect the underlying external oblique, with the inguinal region inferomedially implied by the course from the ASIS toward the pubic tubercle. Clinically, the flank is a working corridor for renal and ureteral pain patterns and for bedside localization of abdominal wall tenderness, because parietal peritoneum and overlying musculature refer differently than visceral sources. This view also supports planning and teaching for procedures that demand safe orientation to surface anatomy, including lateral trocar placement for laparoscopy, paracentesis site selection lateral to the rectus sheath to avoid the inferior epigastric vessels, and evaluation of abdominal wall bulges such as Spigelian hernia along the semilunar line.
