Description
Posterior surface anatomy of the male scapular region is defined by the palpable scapular spine and acromion forming a bony ridge that runs superolaterally toward the shoulder, with the medial (vertebral) border of the scapula tracking parallel to the thoracic spinous processes. Inferiorly, the inferior angle sits lateral to the midline and moves over the posterior ribs, while the lateral border approaches the posterior axillary fold. Superficial landmarks logically include the upper trapezius contour superior to the spine of scapula and the deltoid cap draping the acromion laterally. It is a clean map of the shoulder blade on the upper back. Surface localization here matters because scapular position and motion are central to diagnosing and treating shoulder complaints that are not purely glenohumeral. Scapular dyskinesis, long thoracic nerve palsy with serratus anterior weakness (medial border winging), and spinal accessory nerve injury affecting trapezius all declare themselves at the body surface when you track the medial border, inferior angle, and the orientation of the scapular spine during arm elevation. Palpation of the acromion and scapular spine also anchors posterior shoulder injections and guides safe corridors when planning posterior approaches around the scapulothoracic interface.
