Talocrural Region of the Male Foot, Lateral View

Description

Surface landmarks around the talocrural (ankle) region are rendered in lateral view, centered on the lateral malleolus of the fibula and the adjacent contour of the talus beneath it. Anteriorly, the extensor retinacula and extensor tendons create subtle ridges toward the dorsum of the foot, while posteriorly the Achilles (calcaneal) tendon forms a strong vertical contour before inserting on the posterior calcaneus. Inferior to the malleolus, the peroneal (fibularis longus and brevis) tendon line tracks toward the lateral border of the foot, with the calcaneal tuberosity and lateral hindfoot margins defining the heel. Clinically, this lateral surface anatomy view maps directly onto the joint line and ligament complex that clinicians palpate after inversion injuries, including the anterior talofibular ligament just anteroinferior to the lateral malleolus and the calcaneofibular ligament descending toward the calcaneus.
